Retainers

Retainers are essential to establish a stable tooth relationship and keep your smile looking beautiful. The following wear and care instructions will help you maintain your new smile.

Upper retainer - Your upper retainer is a removable appliance designed to maintain your teeth in their corrected position. We routinely do not do bonded upper retainers because daily chewing and sometimes night grinding causes them to break.

We recommend you wear your upper retainer full time for two months, then go to nights only. You can take it out to eat, brush and for special occasions like playing football, singing in choir or giving a speech.

Dogs will chew up your retainer (even through the retainer case)

Hot (car dashboards, washing machines, hot water, etc) will warp your retainer.

Do not wrap your retainer in a papertowel or kleenix...You will throw it away. Always put it in your case.

Clean it with your toothbrush and toothpaste. Clean it once a week with a denture cleanser using warm (not hot) water

Lower retainer - Your lower retainer is a fixed or removable appliance designed to maintain your teeth in their corrected position.

If your retainer is removable, follow the same instructions as outlined for the upper retainer.

If fixed, a wire is attached to the inside of your lower front teeth. It will remain in your mouth as long as possible or until your doctor approves it's removal.

When brushing be extra careful to clean the wire and the inside of your lower teeth. Remember to floss at least once a day and use floos threader between the retainer wire and the gums.

**Always bring your retainer to your appointments so the doctors can adjust it if needed. If your retainer does not fit it means your teeth may have shifted or the retainer has been warped. Call us as soon as possible to get the retainer replaced (There is an additional fee to replace any retainer)

Orthodontic Insurance

Orthodontic insurance differs from regular dental insurance in that it rarely pays for treatment in full. If your insurance covers orthodontic treatment, you will receive the benefit of reduced personal costs. Orthodontic policies typically cover 50% of the total treatment cost, up to a specified lifetime maximum, which varies from company to company. This benefit is paid out over the course of the treatment until the lifetime maximum is reached. For example, if treatment is 12 months, the payments from the insurance company will be paid out over 12 months.
We are happy to review your insurance with you and determine what benefits are available to you. At your initial examination with our office we will give you a total treatment workup to give you an idea of your financial responsibility. As a courtesy to our patients, our office files all of the necessary claims required and we accept payments to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses. Please remember that if, during the course of treatment, your benefits change, the responsible party becomes accountable for all charges.

Adult orthodontics   Am I too old for braces?

Absolutely not! Today, 30% of orthodontic patients are over the age of 18 years old. The largest group of adults in braces is age 18 to 29 but the second largest is age 35 to 49. Crooked teeth, missing teeth, overbites and protrusive teeth (flared teeth) are just a few of the problems that can be addressed at any age. Orthodontics can inhibit gum problems and prevent tooth loss. Many general dentists are referring their adult patients to the orthodontist prior to restorative dentistry. They realize that proper alignment of the teeth creates a better overall result. The importance of function and stability are many times overshadowed by aesthetics. Teeth that do not occlude (touch) properly tend to wear at a faster rate and can be traumatized by other teeth. Placing the teeth in proper alignment, as well as coordinating the upper and lower arches should prevent excessive enamel wear, cracked teeth and in many cases jaw joint discomfort.
     Aging causes every part of our body to "shift" in the wrong direction. This is also seen in our occlusion (bite relationship) and teeth. Problems generally get worse with age. For instance, a 30 to 40 year old with an overbite may have very little damage to the teeth or enamel, but another 25 years with the same malocclusion could and probably will create significant issues. The front teeth could chip, the enamel will show wear and multiple teeth may crack. Braces as a growing child would have been ideal for total bite correction, but braces at age 30 to 50 will align the teeth and prevent damage.
     We talk to parents every day about about the long term benefits of braces for their children. Many respond with "I wish I could have gotten braces when I was young" We smile and tell them they are still a candidate for braces, as long as their teeth and gingiva (gums) are healthy. Health maintenance is an excellent investment for our future. Aging gracefully doesn't happen effortlessly. We spend our time and money on gym memberships, clothes and swim suits that hold us in and lift us up, hair dye, artificial nails, tanning products, liposuction, tummy tucks, hair plugs, laser hair removal, vascular treatments, skin tightening, and face lifts. Why not our teeth?
     Health maintenance and self improvement is a tremendous benefit to you. Keeping your teeth healthy and improving your smile and appearance will affect your sense of well-being and your confidence, and often garner positive comments from others. Stop putting it off. What does it means to be Board Certified?

The American Board of Orthodontics was founded in 1929 and is the oldest specialty board in dentistry. A board certified orthodontist has completed an American Dental Association accredited graduate program in the specialty of orthodontics. Board certification is a process by which an individual orthodontist is voluntarily examined by his peers in regard to their orthodontic knowledge and clinical skills. This certification process involves a thorough written examination and presentation of treated cases which are evaluated by expert examiners of The American Board of Orthodontics during a Clinical Examination. The passage of the examination process is a demonstration to the dental profession and the general public of the orthodontist's pursuit to continue proficiency and excellence. An orthodontist must re-examine on a periodic basis to retain the Board certified status.

The primary purpose of the Board is to elevate the level of the orthodontic care for the public. The mission statement of the Board defines four objectives: 1) to evaluate the knowledge and clinical skills of graduates of accredited orthodontic programs by conducting exams and conferring time-limited certificates; 2) to re-evaluate clinical knowledge and skills by recertification exams throughout a Diplomate's career; 3) to support development of quality graduate, postgraduate and continuing education programs in orthodontics; and 4) to promote and encourage certification expertise throughout the world.

Only dentists who have completed an advanced education program in orthodontics approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association are eligible to apply for certification. Dr. Carroll. L Sherman has been a Board Certified Diplomate since March 4, 1989, Dr. Darrel R. Sherman became a Diplomate on May 1, 2006 and Dr. Patrick R. Briscoe completed his certification on March 1, 2010. We are so proud that all three of our orthodontists are Board Certified Diplomates and went the extra mile to provide our patients the very best in orthodontic care.

HEY, I was here first!!

Have you ever checked in and had a seat in our reception area only to notice that people who checked in after you are already being called back? There are many reasons why this might happen. Please allow me to explain...

1) Our Patient Manager system - In our office we take pride that each of our patients are cared for by their very own patient manager. This is an assistant who has been appointed to you at the time that your appliances were placed. She is the one who manages your care throughout your treatment. It is important to us that your treatment be closely monitored by someone who is familiar with your treatment history and who can assist the doctors in reaching your treatment goals. We try very hard to appoint you in your patient manager's chair at you routine appointment. On occasion a patient manager may be ready for their patient before your patient manager is ready for you.

2) Different departments within the office - We have several possible areas that a patient may be scheduled:

Operatory - Where patient managers and doctors care for our patients.
Laboratory - Where x-rays and photos are taken and sometimes where certain retainers are fitted.
Treatment Coordinator Office - Where our new patients are seen for their initial exams and where in office consultations take place.
Insurance/Paperwork Office - Where patients go to discuss insurance issues or sign the necessary paperwork to begin treatment.
Recall Area - Where our recall patients are seen who we are monitoring on a regular basis.
Speech Pathologist - We have a Speech Pathologist in our office. Her clients are also seated in our reception area.

3) Check retainers, Emergency & Late Patients

Retainer Check Patients - These appointments are not scheduled in a patient manager chair. This allows us to seat those patients in a chair specific for those appointments.
Emergency Patients - Depending on the type of emergency, those appointments are sometimes a very quick fix that does not require a doctor so a patient manager who is available may get those patients back for a quick repair.
Walk in Patients - If you have walked into our office without an appointment time we are always willing to see you, however we feel that our already scheduled patients who are on time for their appointments should be seen as close to their appointed time as possible.
Late Patients - If you are late for your appointment we are willing to work you into our schedule. Our schedule is a very intricate part of our office being efficient and keeping our average wait time to 6 minutes. We feel that our patients who are on time should be seen as close to their appointed time as possible. We will be more than happy to see all late patients as our schedule allows but not at the expense of making our "on time" patients wait.

We know your time is precious and although sometimes it may seem that others are being seen before you, we hope you understand that there could be many reasons that other patients are being called back before you.

If you feel you are waiting an unusual length of time, we encourage you to check with one of our appointment secretaries to make sure you are checked in correctly.

When should my child get an orthodontic check-up?

Many parents think they must wait until their child has all permanent teeth to see an orthodontist, only to find that the treatment would have been much simpler if started earlier. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. So, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.
What's so special about age seven? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for an orthodontist to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or "bad bite." Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.
Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.
Early evaluation may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, give us a call to schedule an appointment.
